Born in 1821, DANIEL HARVEY HILL was educated at West Point. This letter was written during his service in the Mexican American War, where he became disillusioned with the heroic model of combat, calling the wartime journalists "a loving and loyal set of toadies." He fought on the Confederate side in the Civil War, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant general, but his record was besmirched during an episode of insubordination to General Braxton Bragg (click here to see a letter by Bragg). He died in North Carolina in 1889. Get transcript
