Born in 1821, DANIEL HARVEY HILL was
educated at West Point. This letter was written during
his service in the Mexican American War, where he became
disillusioned with the heroic model of combat, calling
the wartime journalists "a loving and loyal set of
toadies." He fought on the Confederate side in the
Civil War, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant general,
but his record was besmirched during an episode of insubordination
to General Braxton Bragg (click
