Poster Caption: Phillis Wheatley, slave, child prodigy, poet, and founder of the African American writing tradition, is depicted here in the frontispiece of her breakthrough book, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral (London, 1773). Her brilliance impressed Americans and Britons alike and she was held up as an exemplar of the abilities of black people.
