Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"I supposed you have in mind ... that on Saturday next you & I are to hear [Adelina] Pattie in the matinee 2PM." "Tonight you & I go to 'Faust' ... Wednesday - Wm. Tell - Thursday - Don Giovanni - Friday - Rigoletto, Saturday - Traviata ... " Written on stationery of Headquarters of the Army of the United States.
