Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks that the last 500 speeches of his that he ordered be sent to the folding room of the House of Representatives. Postscript requests the country newspaper be delivered to him in Buffalo, N.Y., during the recesss. Wants $1 worth of speeches sent to William B. Smith of Buskirk's Bridge, NY.

Seaton and Gales were the publishers of the National Intelligencer newspaper and the Register of Debates, which ceased publication on the same date as this letter. Fillmore was a State Representative from New York at this time.
