Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists clothing shipped on board Captain Hardie's ship, Olimpe, at Brest, France 15 June 1781. A separate list indicates artillery, ordnance, and camp equipage on board the Cybelle, ordnance stores on the ship Ruise, and medicines and instruments on board the Active. Shipped by order of [John] Laurens, special minister to France.
