Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from camp at Westpoint, Philipsburg, and Pigskill (possibly Peekskill) New York. Notes shoes, clothing, and blankets supplied to each of the soldiers over the course of the year. Contains signatures of the enlisted men with x marks, indicating illiteracy. A section of pages in the middle has been cut out. Book is bound.
