Legal brief in the suit of Jones, surviving partner of Farrell and Jones, of Great Britain, against Thomas Walker, Defendant, in debt on bond before the Federal Circuit Court, Richmond, Va. Entirely in the hand of Edmund Pendleton. Probably 1791.

One of the greatest post-war problems in Virginia was the settlement of pre-war debts with English merchants, required by the Treaty of Peace, but virtually impossible in the inflation-ridden, cash poor economy of post-war Virginia. These problems were complicated by the British war depredations there. Pendleton frequently raised this issue in his correspondence with Madison. Here he transmits the arguments in an important case of this kind.

Subject terms: Validity of American pre-war debts to Britain, Thomas Walker, Jones v. Walker court case.
