Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Business letter that mentions procuring rice, the loss of a crop of "pink root," a lawsuit, and getting some Tenerife wine. This is an uncommon autograph.

Telfair was a signer of the Articles of Confederation. Clay was a Savannah merchant, politician, and rice planter who had served in the Revolutionary War.
