Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Appointment of Philip R. Ward to Major in the Coast Artillery Corps, beginning December 6, 1911. Signed by William Howard Taft as President and countersigned Henry L. Stimson as Secretary of War. Docketed at top by the Adjutant General, reads "The adjutant General's Office, Recorded December 29, 1911". Features a paper seal from the War Office and two detailed patriotic scenes.
