Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Carte-de-visite of the painting of Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee in uniform. Originally painted by Gilbert Stuart. Published by "The 'Lee' Photographic Gallery." Paul C. Nagel's The Lees of Virginia (1990) indicates it was said to have been painted shortly before he went to jail for debt in 1809.
