Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Saw Frederick Fine, a block maker, and says Fine would appreciate a letter from Lewis.

Abraham Lewis was the captain of "Lady Washington" a row galley on the Hudson river. The row galleys served as part of a blockade of the Hudson river against the British.
Joseph Marschalk was a forage master during the American Revolution.
