Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Copy of a letter written to Massachusetts Senator Pickering from Gabriel Duvall, Comptroller of the United States Treasury. Duvall states that Pickering's "accounts as late Secretary of State of the United States are finally closed on the books of the Treasury." The original letter was created on 5 December 1810.
