Captain Lawton, apparently a Confederate being held in Alexandria and probably mortally wounded, had asked to be visited by his wife. Lee's letter acknowledges receipt of Burnside's offer of conveyance for Mrs. Lawton.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of today in reference to the fate of Captain E. P. Lawton. Mrs. Lawton, I am sure, will gladly accept your kind offer of a conveyance to her husband at Alexandria. She is at present in Richmond, and cannot reach here before tomorrow or next day.
