Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letters to his wife Mary Hughes. Hughes, a doctor from Wheeling, Virginia, was detained at Camp Chase, Ohio, as a Confederate sympathizer. He and his wife, Mary, numbered their letters to know which ones were lost, stolen or censored. The collection includes his last will, news clippings relating to the war and prisoners of war.
