At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written as Major General to Moore, commander of the 29th Regt. Va. Vols., during the week before first Manassas. (Written before his assignment as commander in South Carolina and later as commander in chief of the Army of Northern Virginia.)

You will complete the organization of your Regiment with all possible dispatch and proceed to Staunton and apply to Major M. G. Haman for arms who will be directed to furnish them to you. Should you not have received a sufficient number of companies for the organization of your Regt. You are authorized to receive the requisite number that may offer their services for twelve months. Report what field officers have joined you, whether you have tents, and any part of your equipment.
