Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Creator's signature is illegible. Encloses an article (not included) from the Republican, possibly a newspaper, which contains "slurs on our artillery." Notes that he is indexing a manuscript for publication. Mentions the 1 July 1862 Battle of Malvern Hill.

Hunt had served as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. From 1883 until his death in 1889, he was Governor of the Soldier's Home in Washington, D.C.
