Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly a copy in General Scammon's hand of a decoded cypher telegram to Scammon from Colonel White of the 12th Ohio infantry regarding scouting activities. Reports on the Confederate troops's whereabouts and requests again more artillery ammunition. States that enemy scouts are lurking about the picket lines. Written on half a piece of stationary marked Head Quarters, 3rd Division, 8th Army Corps.
