Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written and signed for Henry Knox by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. This document certifies that Thorp served in the corps of artillery artificers from November 1776 to the present time. Says "his knowledge of and attention to his duty have invariably marked him an industrious and useful servant of the public." His unit being dissolved, he retires from the service agreeable to the Congressional resolution of 26 May.
