Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written and signed for Knox in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. Certifies that retiring Lieutenant Florence Crowley served in the Corps of Artillery under General Knox from 1777 to 1783. Praises Crowley for being an "attentive, brave, and intelligent officer."
