Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Request for ten rations of provisions for a soldier and his two children. Relates that the soldier is sick in the hospital, his wife and one child have already died, and the other children will too without the relief. Noted as received and signed with a mark on the verso by Abraham Littlefield.
