Same as GLC02437.03465. Writes a recommendation to Lincoln for Mr. Payson, a "reputable inhabitant of Massachusetts" who is looking for "employment to give him bread." Notes he has no openings at present and is referring him to Lincoln.

My dear Sir
Mr Payson, the bearer has been a reputable inhabitant of Massachusetts, but is now in great distress owing to some peculiar [inserted: unhappy] circumstances in his family. He has applied to me for some employment to give him bread, but there is nothing at present [struck: at] in my disposal, [struck: had] as [strikeout] [inserted: the military arrangements] in Massachusetts may occasion [struck: some] demands for persons in [struck: the state] Matters or some companys line, he has conceived that he may obtain some subordinate appointment under your patronage - I am persuaded from my knowledge of Mr Payson, that there are duties which he once fulfilled to the satisfaction of those who recommend or employ him
