Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from "Auditors Office State of Maryland." A Mr. R. Denny of the Auditor's Office certifies that according to his office's books, Lieutenant Jacob Norris settled an account in 1779 in which he "has a credit for sixteen men recruited by him for the Continental Army."
