Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Knox to take an enclosed letter (not present) to the President, but asks him to read it first to ensure its propriety. Comments that he believes Rhode Island will soon become part of the "Federal Body," and therefore is applying to the Collector's Office in Newport. If that office is unavailable, would be happy with another position.
