Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Later copy. Encloses estimates of expenses for building and equipping frigates (not included). First estimate was from 1790 and is the most perfect, although the wage rates were too low. The second estimate is accurate, but does not comprehend all the equipment issues. The third estimate was tolerably accurate of those items it comprehended, but he has not had enough time to fully understand it. Noted as copied on 5 December 1857.
