Dinsmore writes Knox when he learns that his rank as Lieutenant had not been reserved for him while he was Agent to the Cherokees. He took that position in 1794 shortly after receiving an appointment as Lieutenant in the corps of Artillerists and Engineers. Dinsmore was under the impression that Knox would see to it that the Lieutenancy was preserved, as it would be improper to hold both positions. The current Secretary of War, Timothy Pickering, does not want to interfere, as it was under Knox's tenure that this all took place. Pickering recommended to Dinsmore that he write to Knox. Dinsmore says he is willing to rest his claim on Knox's recollection of the matter.

- The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
