Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cosigned by Benjamin Jones Porter and Charles Coffin. The men thank Knox for being "one of the principle patrons" of Bowdoin College and asks him to donate lime to help with a foundation of a new building (the college's first). Docketed as a duplicate of the original (GLC02437.07267).
