Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that Captain [Edward] Kelleran has, on board his vessel, a shipment of lime from the Knox estate. As he understands from his father's letters to his mother, their lime is not selling well in Boston. He therefore has asked Kelleran to stop at Portland and try to sell their lime there.
