At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Clay, Assistant Adjutant General for Confederate General Samuel Cooper writes that Cooper does not advise diminishing the Army of Tennessee and does not approve the suggestion that General John Cabell Breckinridge's Regiment and Dortch's Battalion should be sent to General John H. Morgan. Discusses the command of Duke and Smith (possibly Basil Wilson Duke). Possibly written 19 February, and transmitted with GLC02460.10.01.
