Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General McCook replies to correspondence from Perley, chairman of the Autograph Committee of the Cleveland, Ohio Sanitary Fair. Says "I am sorry to say, that I have not now in my possession, any orders or correspondence pertaining to the War, all having been forwarded to the proper departments. God speed you in your great work to comfort and care for our gallant soldiers in the field. What nobler work could the glorious people of Northern Ohio be engaged in?"
