A pencil note on verso suggests that this document was intended for Colonel John Wilder. Rosecrans, Commander of the Army of the Cumberland, writes after the Tullahoma Campaign. Informs Wilder, "It would please me and your brigade if I could say My dear General. Be please to present my thanks to the Brigade for the beautiful testimonial of their confidence and respect. Tell that noble brigade that I hold in high esteem their past service, and confide in their spirit courage and good discipline for a future of increasing usefulness and honor. Accept for your self personally my thanks for your high and meritorious services, which merit your promotion."
