Brigadier General Doubleday, commander of the 3rd Division, 1st Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, recommends Lieutenant Benjamin J. Marten, Aide-de-Camp, for promotion in his regiment. Notes that Marten has been "with me in the Battles of Gainesville Bull Run South Mountain Antietam and Fredericksburg. He is a brave and capable officer, fearless by nature and ready for any enterprise to which he may be called by the patriotic needs of the day." Written on Headquarters, 3rd Division, 1st Army Corps, Army of the Potomac stationery.
