Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Secretary of State Hale to prepare a pardon for Jacobus J. Low. Low had been convicted in Ulster County of receiving two barrels of stolen flour, and sentenced to pay a $50 fine and serve 4 months in jail. Written by Jay as Governor of New York. Two seated black and white engravings, one right profile engraving, and one bust engraving of John Jay included.

at the last Court of Oyer & Terminer held in and for the County of Ulster, Jacobus J. Low was convicted on having received two Barrels of Flour knowing the same to have been stolen, & was sentenced to four months Imprisonment and a Fine of Fifty Dollars.
Prepare a pardon for him on Condition that the same shall not take effect nor have any operation until the said Fine shall first have been paid--
