Acknowledges receiving his wife's letter. Comments on the return of the Naval Academy to Annapolis, and the government's ability to build hospitals. Discusses his department and military matters, taxes, and Alida's restlessness, and the brigadier general brevet of R.S. Satterlee. Says "I hear that the draft is ordered to proceed at once." Notes at the top of page one that he is "in excellent health."
