At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

On a small card, President Lincoln writes to Captain Gilmore, the chief engineer on the Port Royal Expedition to South Carolina, regarding General Thomas W. Sherman's attack on Port Royal: "I feel great interest in Gen. Sherman's expedition; and therefore prefer to not interfere with the programme." Accompanied by a carte de visite of Lincoln (GLC02798.02).
