Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Small newspaper broadside re-printing Grant's famous notice to Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War, about Lee's surrender at Appomattox. "Let the People Rejoice. Surrender of Lee and His Whole Army. Ring the Bells and Shout Loud Huzzas." With a manuscript note "Printed At Midnight Sunday April 9. /65."
