Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of four war date letters from a soldier in the 11th Mississippi Volunteers to his sister. Davison comments on Fort Donelson in a letter written from Camp Fisher. Also mentions a defeat at Annandale. The two final letters of 15 January 1863 and 1 April 1863 mention his plans to get married.
