One letter from M.A. Jackson to Samuel H. Leonard dated October 21, 1861. Describes a battle in detail (possibly the regiment's first skirmish at Beller's Mill on 2 September 1861) including the good work of the new recruits and descriptions of the difference in attitude and weaponry between the Union and Confederate forces. He claims it was the first time he'd seen the 'rebel flag' on the battlefield.
