Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Major General Peck, commander of the District of North Carolina, acknowledges receipt of a letter discussing General Edward Augustus Wild's brigade. Informs Gillmore, commander of the Department of the South, that upon learning of the arrival of Gillmore's steamer in Beaufort, North Carolina, Peck ordered his quartermaster to remove unspecified items. Written on "Head-Quarters, Army and District of North Carolina" stationery.

During the Civil War, Wild assisted in recruiting United States Colored Troops and commanded the "Wild African Brigade."
