Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry writes to his sister from the U.S. General Hospital in Brattleboro. Complains the War Department has issued an order canceling all furloughs and he will not be coming home. Reports that his regiment has gone back to the front and is eight miles beyond Culpeper, Virginia with 23 days of rations.

Henry enlisted on 27 August 1861 in Vermont as a private. He mustered into "I" Co., Vermont 5th Infantry.
