Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry writes to his parents and sister from a fort in Virginia. Name of fort is illegible. Reports he has a fever and chills. States he is going to enlist for five years to fight the Indians on the frontier. Requests news from home. Mentions all the articles of clothing he has purchased since he enlisted.

Henry enlisted on 12 December 1863 in Vermont as a private. He mustered into "A" Co., Vermont 1st Calvary.
