Written from camp near Charlestown, Virginia. Discusses John Brown and treason. Expresses concern over mother's health and father's business affairs. Discusses the burning of resources during a recent retreat. Describes citizen guerrillas and their techniques, and mentions the work of the Christian Commission: "…We have retreated from our position near Strausburg and are now encamped near Charlestown where old John Brown was hung for treason and where Jeff Davis and his confederates ought to hang for their deeds of treason…"
