Writes that he is lucky to be alive after a battle. Says that Alfred Goddard was seriously wounded in the abdomen and he fears that Alfred will not recover. Details his behaviors and bravery during the battle and says that he received the best care possible. Writes that he has some of Alfred's things. Estimates that 80 men were lots, 4 of them officers.
Camp 8th Conn Vols near Petersburg, Va, May 8
Dear All, Again in God's infinite mercy I have been spared when many others were cut down beside me. Alf. Goddard is seriously wounded in the abdomen - there is little chance of recovery. He behaved splendidly throughout the whole day & while he displayed no rashness as I expected in all things conducted himself brave & skillful officer. His conduct during the whole day was beyond witness. No one could have done more or better. I saw him at the Hospt as we were marching back to Camp & he was then feeling rather discouraged about himself but at 4 this morning he was put in ambulance for the landing to be taken to Ft. Monroe & was there feeling brighter. When he was wounded I sent him to the rear immediately by three men & I think he had as good care as was possible in a field hospital. At Ft. Monroe he will receive every attention. I find I must send this letter immediately. [top margin first page] I have some of Alf's things & Dr. Storrs has remainder. Our loss is about 80 - 4 Officers.
