Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from camp Bermuda that they have been busy moving camp and that the chaplain is ill. He also writes that Colonel Ward has recovered and has been offered a regiment.

Dear All,
Am well & that's about all. Have been busy lately moving Camp & c and have no time to write today. Recd a real good long letter from George dated La Salle Augt 15th Best love - Chas - Our Chaplain has gone to Hospt. sick. He had lost his appetite & had made several attempts to get leave to visit his wife who has been at Norfolk during the summer. Col. Ward has had a Brigade offered him & suddenly recovers his health. He assumes command of 3d Brigade of this Div next Monday. Has done no duty with Regt.
