Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requesting a five day leave of absence "to go to Washington & Baltimore on business." Requesting the leave from his brother, who ranked below him but was the Acting Adjutant of their company.

Thomas D. Chamberlain was the younger brother of Joshua L. Chamberlain. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Union Army.
