Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks for a 20 day leave of absence to recover his health following Gettysburg.

Bowdoin College professor, went to Maine state capital to offer his services; made lieutenant colonel of the 20th Maine on 8 August 1862. Took part in battles in Antietam, Sheperdstown Ford, Fredericksburg (wounded), and Chancellorsville. Received the Congressional Medal of Honor for service at Gettysburg, where he received a second wound. Relieved from field service in November 1863. Resumed command of regiment in May 1864 for Cold Harbor battle. Wounded in Petersburg in June. Died 50 years later as a result of injuries sustained there. Commanded troops that formally accepted the surrender of the Confederate army. Later served as governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin College.
