Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document authorizes the Secretary of State to affix the seal of the United States to Lincoln's proclamation permitting the conscription of foreigners. This was under the Enrollment Act of Congress, March 3, 1863, for foreigners who had declared their intention to become United States citizens, "in certain cases." Title from docket.
