At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Probably a retained draft. Grant has blotted and overwritten numerous words. He claims that he cannot serve because of the Senate's "Act Regulating the Tenure of Certain Civil Officers."

[inserted: E.M. Stanton] Sec. of War, [struck: E.M. Stanton.] According to the provisions of Sec. 2 of "An Act regulating the Tenure of certain Civil Offices" my functions as Secretary of War, ad interim, ceased from the moment of the receipt of the written notice.
