Chamberlain, Lieutenant Colonel of the 20th Maine Volunteers, writes to Brown (possibly John Marshall Brown), Adjutant of the 20th Regiment. Requests a fifteen day leave of absence to attend to business in Maine, "involving pecuniary and other important interests." Adds that all field officers of the 20th Regiment are present.
Chamberlain was promoted in the field to Brigadier General of Volunteers in June 1864, and Major General of Volunteers in March 1865. He served as Governor of Maine 1867-1871.
