Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pass No. 1470, allowing the paroled prisoner, Edwin Ivy, to return home to New Orleans with one horse and two servants, signed by Assistant Provost Marshal Captain J.A. Sexton. Partially-printed note of same date on verso, also signed by Sexton, indicates that the Quartermaster's Department will provide all necessary transportation for Ivy.
