At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks that all possible reinforcements be sent to Cairo to assist "as I wish to cut the enemy's line before Beauregard arrives. Noted "in cypher."

Thomas A. Scott was the assistant secretary of war, supervising all governmental railways and transportation lines. In January 1862 he was sent to organize transportation in the Northwest. In June he resigned to focus on commercial railroad pursuits.
